Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
April 30, 2004
This was a 'day trip' for us to go and see the new baseball stadium in Philadelphia. We started out the day by going to 'Reading Terminal Market', and then headed down Broad Street to the new Citizens Bank Park. Had some GREAT BBQ at Bull's BBQ in Ashburn Alley. This fast became our favorite Major League park, even after visiting PNC, Camden, and Turner Field, we both agree that this is the best. The atmosphere, the fans, the food - it all rates #1 in our book!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Game Story
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Randy Wolf is finding his stride.
Wolf pitched seven strong innings to extend his scoreless streak
to 21 frames and combined with Rheal Cormier on a five-hitter
as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks,
4-0.
Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome hit back-to-back homers for the
Phillies, who have won five of their last seven games.
Wolf (2-1) was winless in his first three starts of the season
and did not last into the seventh inning in any of those
outings. The lefthander bounced back to toss a four-hit shutout
against Montreal on Sunday and was just as good in this one,
allowing five hits, walking one and striking out five.
"I feel pretty good out there," said Wolf, who had struggled
two starts ago against Montreal on April 18. "It all stems back
to that Montreal game back here where I was horrible that first
inning. I did not lose confidence from that. The main thing I
wanted to do was hit my spots and be aggressive in the zone."
After a 13-inning game Thursday in St. Louis, the Phillies were
hoping for a long outing from Wolf, whose brother Jim, was the
umpire at third base on Friday.
"That's two outstanding outings in a row and we needed that
tonight," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "The bullpen was
spent."
"(Wolf) kept us off-balance all day," said Luis Gonzalez, who had
the lone extra-base hit for Arizona, a double to right center in
the fourth.
Cormier retired all six batters he faced to complete the win.
Arizona starter Elmer Dessens (1-3) allowed all four runs in the
third.
Wolf had a one-out bloop single to left field and went to second
on a base hit by Marlon Byrd. Placido Polanco barely beat out
a double-play grounder to keep the inning alive and Abreu
followed with his fifth homer of the season to right field to
make it 3-0.
"It was an up-and-in fastball and I was trying get it there,"
explained Abreu, who was just 2-for-13 with two outs and runners
in scoring position. "I am struggling with runners in scoring
position and I am just trying to put the ball in play."
Thome followed with his seventh homer of the season and second
in as many games to complete the scoring.
"It's a (darn) shame," said Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly. "I
think the replay showed that the runner (Polanco) was out at
first base and we're out of the inning. They ended up scoring
four runs. They shouldn't have even had those hitters to the
plate in that inning."
Dessens allowed six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out
three.
One of the few bright spots for Arizona was Danny Batista, who
singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 21 games.
Rob Hammock had a pair of hits for the Diamondbacks. Hammock's
second hit, an infield punch shot past a diving Wolf, loaded the
bases with two outs in the seventh. Wolf then struck out pinch
hitter Bobby Estalella to get out of the jam.
"We had a shot there," Brenly said. "I think he threw his
fastest pitch of the night to Estalella."
