This was a quick jaunt for Jill and I through the Finger Lakes region to watch Michael play a travel hockey game in Geneva. Taking full advantage of the drive, we stopped in Ithaca along the way for lunch at one of our favorite restaurants - Moosewood. Located in the Dewitt Mall in downtown Ithaca, the Moosewood name is probably better known for the numerous cookbooks they have in print, but the restaurant is where all of those good recipes come to life! That, and they serve up an awesome sangria - in a pitcher! What more could you ask for in a lunch, eh? I wasn't feeling all that great, so we skipped the sangria this time around, but the food we had was great none the less.
After lunch, we continued up Route 96 between Cayuga and Seneca lakes. Just outside of Geneva, on the eastern side of Cayuga Lake, we realized we had some time to kill so we stopped at Ventosa Vineyards. Ventosa is a relatively new Finger Lakes winery (we were told they opened just over a year ago), but one that we will definately make a regular should we find ourselves in this part of the Finger Lakes again. The building is reminiscent of a 'Tuscan' landscape, and the view of the lake is beautiful. We did a quick white wine tasting, and ended up purchasing a 2003 Chardonnay.
A slight turn to the left around the top of Seneca Lake, we found the Geneva Recreation Complex, which included the ice rink. The rink is partially enclosed, and we were thankful that it was a rather mild day in upstate New York. I'm sure on days where the wind blows off of the lake and through the openings at the side of the rink it gets downright frigid in there.
Michael started the game, and played until the halfway point of the second period, making two saves on two shots. Owen Miller came in and finished out the shutout, with Binghamton winning the game 11-0.
Good food, good booze, good hockey...that's a good day in our book!
