A quick day trip to watch the Auburn Doubledays play the Staten Island Yankees. We had tried to get to a game here last season with Michael, but it didn't work out.
This game was sandwiched between Friday and Sunday 'free admission' games, so there weren't many people there. Couple that with the fact that rain storms had been rolling through the area during the day, and it led to a quiet stadium. The announced attendace for the game was a stitch over 800, but I highly doubt there were close to that many people there.
A smaller stadium and quite a difference from our trip to Brooklyn a few weeks ago. There is a definite 'difference' in the NY-Penn League, with places like Auburn and Oneonta being the old cornerstones, and places like Brooklyn and Tri-City being the newer and flashier kids on the block.
The stadium has about five rows of chairback, individual seats that run from one side to the other, and metal backed bleachers making up the remainder of the seating area. One concession stand services the entire park. The locker rooms for the home and visiting teams are down the first and third base lines respectively.
With the small crowd, the Doubledays staff were a bit short on kids to take part in the 'in game' promotions, so Michael helped them out. Not only did he take part in the 'dizzy bat race', but he also did musical chairs and an 'air guitar' contest.
Auburn made the game interesting by grabbing a small lead, and then letting the Yankees back into the game. The Doubledays ended up winning in the bottom of the 10th with a nice hit up the middle by Scott Campbell. Story at Falcon Park was that Scott is the first professional baseball player to come out of New Zealand. There was even a sports reporter from New Zealand at the game doing a story about Scott.
