Our second half marathon in a week took us back to the (almost) site of my first half marathon. West Haven, Connecticut is just east of Milford, where I ran in September of 2011 for my first. This race, the Savin Rock Half Marathon, was run by the same organization that did the Gulf Beach Half.
When Mike got home from school on Friday, we headed east, arriving in West Haven around 7:15 or so. Checked out the site of the half, and then went in search of somewhere for our pre-race carb up. We settled on Lorenzo's Ristorante Italiano, which came well recommended by the reviews on Yelp. Food was good, what we were looking for. To the hotel afterwards to grab some sleep. We stayed at the Hampton Inn South - West Haven this trip.
Saturday morning, we were up and out (well, Jill and I were, Mike stayed in bed), and to the Savin Rock Conference Center for an 8:00 start. Race was a bit hilly - hillier than we had expected - and the wind along the water for the last couple of miles was brutal as well. At least this time, though, we didn't have to run on the beach to finish as we did at Gulf Beach! My SpiBelt and Jill's water bottle proved to be casualties of the race as both broke in the process of completing 13.1.
After the race, we went back to the hotel, showered, changed, grabbed Mike, and headed to Middletown, Connecticut for brunch. On a previous trip to this part of the world, we stopped at O'Rourke's Diner after seeing it on an episode of Triple D. The food last trip was good, and we figured we were in the neighborhood, relatively, why not go back! We waited for 20 minutes or so for a booth, which is probably the usual wait (if not shorter than usual). One drawback this time around - it was Sunday, and they don't serve their lunch menu on the weekend - booo!! Had some chow, then hopped back in the car and made the drive home, getting here around 6:30 or so.
