New York, New York

Thursday, July 5, 2012 - Friday, July 6, 2012

A combo trip for us, baseball and HSS. Left mid-afternoon on Thursday for MCU Park in Brooklyn. Surprisingly, made it to the game with about 20 minutes to spare! Stayed for the entire game then made our way down the boardwalk a bit, stopping at Nathan's (on the boardwalk) for a beer and dog. We went back to the car and drove to Harrison where we were staying the night at the Hampton Inn there.

Friday morning, we hopped the trains to HSS. Jill had an appointment with Dr. Ashany - cortisone injection in her knee! Yikes! Stopped at Bagel Works for a late breakfast before taking the trains back to Harrison and the car. Made our way back to Binghamton, stopping at La Tonalteca and Rita's on the Carbondale Highway along the way.

Williamsport Crosscutters 5, Brooklyn Cyclones 4

Brooklyn, NY - July 5th - The Cyclones struck first on Thursday night, taking an early 1-0 advantage, but their lead was short-lived as Brooklyn fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-4.

After being shut down by Williamsport starter Jordan Guth in the first couple innings, the Cyclones got on the board in the third. Back-to-back singles by Jonathan Clark and Juan Gamboa put runners on first and second with one out. Brandon Nimmo then flied out to right field before Phillip Evans reached on a force attempt. Cutters third baseman Mitch Walding committed a throwing error that allowed Clark to cross the plate and make it 1-0 Cyclones.

Brooklyn starting pitcher Rainy Lara struck out the side in the first frame and again in the fourth; however, allowed a run off three consecutive hits in the fourth. Cameron Perkins hit a one-out double and was plated on a single to center off the bat of Walding.

Williamsport jumped ahead in the fifth when DH Chris Serritella hit a one-out, three-run blast over the right field wall. Roman Quinn and Brian Pointer, who both scored on the play, had reached on a single and a walk, respectively.

Matt Sisto replaced Guth on the mound in the bottom of the sixth and gave up two unearned runs. Nimmo began things for the Cyclones, reaching first on a fielding error by Perkins, the Cutters first baseman. A strikeout by Evans and a fly out by Alex Sanchez preceded an RBI line drive double by Cole Frenzel. Frenzel has now reached base safely in 12 straight games. Stefan Sabol then broke his bat on a single to left that plated Frenzel, and advanced to second on a fielding error by left fielder Larry Greene. That single extended Sabol's hitting streak to 11 games.

The Crosscutters picked up another run in the seventh - this time off Brooklyn reliever Tim Peterson. Perkins hit a two-out single, and advanced to second when Walding reached on a throwing error by Sanchez. Perkins came home on an RBI single up the middle by Greene before Yan Olmo flied out to center to end the inning.

The Cyclones put up one last run in the bottom half of the frame when Juan Gamboa homered off Zach Cooper.

Lara took his first loss of the season after going 5.0 innings and allowing four earned runs off nine hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. The Brooklyn bullpen held the Crosscutters to just one unearned run through 4.0 innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

Guth earned the win for Williamsport, having pitched 5.0 innings and surrendering one unearned run off three hits. Jeb Stefan was credited with his second save of the season in the Crosscutters' victory.
