So, our second trip to Newark in a week found us back at Newark International Airport (EWR). The kids week visiting us was up, and we were flying them back via AirTran out of Newark. We headed out of the house after I got home from work on Saturday morning, giving ourselves enough time to arrive an hour or so before their flight. Of course, as our luck would have it, their flight was delayed. So, arriving at EWR three hours before their flight gave us some time to kill. We went to the TGI Fridays in the 'A' terminal and had some lunch. Afterwards, I went through security with the kids and sat with them at the gate until their flight left; Jill headed back to the bar at TGI Fridays until I came back out again.
Never ones to miss an opportunity to extend a trip, Jill and I decided to stay in Newark on Saturday night. This also presented us with the opportunity to head into the city for Easter brunch! (more on that later). Jill found a hotel right in downtown Newark for us to stay at, the Hilton Newark Penn Station - connected to the train station by covered walkway, as well as the Prudential Center! This proved to be a great location for our base of operations for both this trip and our next jaunt to Newark later in the week. Our only catch was we had reserved a concierge floor room, and the concierge lounge wasn't open on the weekend. Otherwise, the room was adequate and again it was a very convenient location for everything we wanted to do.
As I always do, I had scoped out the 'sports options' in Newark prior to heading down, and found that there was an indoor lacrosse game at the Prudential Center that night. We're always up for pretty much any sporting event, and we figured this would be a good opportunity to not only see another new sport in person, but to also check out the Prudential Center (home of the New Jersey Devils!). I called and got us two for one tickets from the New York Titans, and eventually found out that they comped the tix for us - bonus!! We had seats in the end (section 14), which afforded a great view of the entire place.
Across the street from the Prudential Center, we found the Brick City Bar & Grill, a newer establishment that popped up after the Center was built. There was a pretty sparse crowd in there on this night, but you could see the potential for the place being packed after a Devils game! We had the 'trio stuffed mushrooms' as an appetizer, and for dinner Jill had paella and I had lobster ravioli's. All of the food was very good, and it's a place we would definitely go back to if we had the chance. We headed back to the hotel afterwards for some much needed sleep.
Sunday happened to be Easter Sunday, and for our special meal Jill made us reservations at Bar Americain, Bobby Flay's restaurant on West 52nd Street in Manhattan. We hopped on the PATH train into the city from Penn Station in Newark, arriving at the World Trade Center. From there, we grabbed the E train to the 7th Avenue stop, which put us one block from Bar Americain - talk about convenience! No driving into the city, or looking for somewhere to park - awesome! Even though we were a few minutes early, they sat us right away. We had read online that there were some that thought the staff at Bar Americain had a tendency to be rude, or at least not all that friendly, but we found the complete opposite. They all were very efficient at their jobs, and we didn't have to ask for or want for anything - they were right there to help out with whatever we needed. We ordered a couple of mimosa's to start, and then had hot potato chips with blue cheese sauce - yummy, yummy, YUMMY!! For brunch, Jill had the smoked chicken pot pie, with sweet potato biscuit crust, and I had the Kentucky hot brown - both of which were delicious! Thoroughly stuffed at this point, we skipped dessert!
After lunch, and wanting to walk off some of said lunch, we headed over to Fifth Avenue where the Easter Parade was still going on. We saw quite a few interesting hats (and characters!). We stopped quick into St. Patrick's, where mass was still going on, wandered by SNY to check out the Mets score a couple of times, and then wandered into Rosie O'Grady's for a couple of drinks before making the subway and train trek back to the car! We drove back to Binghamton, arriving home around 7:00.
