Our 'annual' trip to Coney Island, this time around with an extra passenger! Took Gram along with us this year, her first time ever to Coney Island. Headed out in the morning, stopping in Gibson for gas (and McDonald's for Mike). Arrived in Coney Island around 12:30, parked at MCU Park. Had lunch at Nathan's at Surf and Stillwell. Gram and Mike went on the go-carts at Luna Park. Hit up some of the stores along Surf and Stillwell. Jill, Mike, and I went on the Steeplechase. Went to the aquarium where we saw the sea lion show, as well as Sponge Bob 4D. A bit of construction going on there - still cleaning up after Super Storm Sandy - will be a beautiful location once it's all finished though from the looks of it. Headed back over to MCU Park for the Cyclones game. It was a Jersday Thursday, all four of us able to get the 'Clones 'away' jersey this time around. Hung out in the bar area downstairs for a bit to cool off and have a couple of drinks before heading up to the game. Left at the bottom of the seventh. Stopped at the Jefferson Diner on the way home. Got home around 1:30AM.
State College Spikes 2, Brooklyn Cyclones 0
BROOKLYN, NY (August 13, 2015) -- The Brooklyn bats were dormant on Thursday night as the Cyclones dropped the second of three to the State College Spikes by a 2-0 score. The loss is Brooklyn's third in a row and one that wasted a masterful performance from LHP Kevin Canelon, who had a career-high 11 strikeouts and is the 17th player in Cyclones history to strikeout 11 or more in single game.
State College grabbed an early lead in the top of the second following a single from Orlando Olivera. A two-out triple from catcher Jose Godoy drove in the run to give the Spikes a 1-0 advantage.
Despite giving up an early run, Canelon was sharp from the very beginning of the contest. He was economical with his pitches, displaying control and overpowering the State College lineup for the most part. He racked up eight strikeouts over the first five innings while allowing just three hits on 62 pitches, 47 of them strikes.
The Spikes would add an insurance run in the seventh after back-to-back singles from Ronnierd Garcia and Godoy put runners at the corners with one out. Jessie Jenner followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Garcia and extending the State College lead to 2-0.
The Cyclones offense, on the other hand, had some trouble supplying run support to Canelon. Brooklyn had five hits over the first five innings, including runners in scoring position in three different frames but failed to score on State College starter Carson Cross. The right hander tossed six shutout innings, striking out five and walking none.
Perhaps Brooklyn's best chance to score came in the bottom of the fifth after a single from Jose Garcia, a fielder's choice from Pedro Perex and an infield hit from Alfredo Reyes. The Cyclones had runners on first and second with one out before Perez was picked off second by the catcher and a fly out ended the threat. Brooklyn failed to record another hit or get a runner to second for the rest of the game.
Canelon (4-4, 3.98) ended his evening the hard-luck loser after turning in his fourth quality start of the season. The lefty exited the game walking none and allowing two runs on six hits over a season-high seven innings.
RHP Johnny Magliozzi took over in the eighth for Brooklyn and found himself in a jam after allowing a single and a double to lead off the inning. After an out and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Magliozzi induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning and keep Brooklyn within two. In the ninth, Carlos Valdez retired the Spikes in order, lowering his season earned run average to 0.83.
Max Almonte came on for State College to toss a scoreless seventh inning before turning things over to Tyler Bray, who recorded his second save of the season with two perfect innings. No Brooklyn runner reached third base the entire game and State College pitching managed to face the minimum number of Cyclone hitters over the last four innings. The loss drops the Cyclones to 3-10 in August and cements a fourth series loss out of the last five.
The Cyclones close out the series with State College on Friday, August 14th at MCU Park. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM with RHP Eddie Villasmil (0-0) on the mound for Brooklyn.
